A disturbing incident occurred in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta where migrants were filmed abusing a young dolphin. The incident took place at El Trampolin beach when the dolphin, a baby bottlenose calf, swam too close to shore. Allegations suggest that a group of men pulled the animal from the water and celebrated, causing anger among locals who tried to intervene.
A video posted online shows men holding the dolphin aloft as onlookers cheered. Some individuals in the crowd expressed disapproval, shouting ‘no’ while others appeared concerned about the dolphin’s welfare. A man is reported to have struck the dolphin with a stick, ultimately killing the animal. In a gesture of compassion, someone later returned the dolphin to the water.
The event has incited significant outrage in Ceuta. Nadia Garcia Gomez addressed the incident on social media, describing it as ‘extreme and unjustifiable cruelty.’ She launched a petition calling for those responsible to be arrested, emphasizing that dolphins are protected under Spanish and European laws.
Anger has been mounting in Ceuta, an area recently experiencing a migrant influx from Morocco. In July, the enclave saw over 70,000 migrants breach its border defenses. While many have returned to Morocco, thousands remain within Ceuta, heightening tensions.
In reaction to the dolphin abuse, some Ceuta residents demand prosecution and deportation of those involved. Recent protests have seen locals dismantling migrant shelters on the beach, urging tougher policies and action from the government in Madrid.
