Supporters of the Forever Canadian group gathered in Edmonton, Alberta, Monday to await the results of a significant non-binding referendum. This referendum addressed whether Alberta should remain part of Canada or explore sovereignty. By early Tuesday, preliminary counts indicated a substantial majority, 76 percent of voters, favored staying with Canada. Only 23 percent leaned toward pursuing the legal steps for a possible binding referendum on separation.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed approval of these results, stating, “Albertans chose Canada.” His comments came amidst a tense trade war with the United States and former President Donald Trump’s hints that Canada should become the 51st state. Carney stood firm against these challenges, igniting a sense of nationalism that resonated strongly with the public. Previously, he cautioned against external forces aiming to destabilize the nation.
In Alberta, Premier Danielle Smith also welcomed the decision, planning to address constituents about future actions. However, Keith Wilson, co-chair of the Let Alberta Decide movement, hinted that discussions about Alberta’s role in Canada would persist.
The referendum included nine other questions, one concerning immigration. Official tallies are expected to be released on October 29.
