Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has announced her decision to freeze her eggs as she considers her future political plans. This comes ahead of potential decisions regarding her participation in the 2028 presidential election campaign. On Instagram, Ocasio-Cortez, 36, explained that this choice provides her with a sense of control over her life.
While the congresswoman from New York, known for her leadership among Democrats’ progressive left, did not specify her intentions regarding having children, she acknowledged the political risk of discussing her family planning publicly. In a Sunday interview on ABC’s ‘This Week,’ she noted that she has not dismissed the possibility of running for president or seeking the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Chuck Schumer in 2028.
Ocasio-Cortez aims to normalize conversations surrounding challenges women face both professionally and personally. She highlighted concerns regarding policies from President Donald Trump’s administration, particularly those affecting reproductive rights. ‘In this political environment, where this administration is denying reproductive care to women across the country, it is crucial for leaders to engage in these discussions,’ she stated.
The Trump administration has opposed abortion rights and the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade further exemplifies this stance. This decision had originally secured a constitutional right to abortion. In a contrasting move, Trump signed an executive order in 2025 to lower in vitro fertilization costs.
In response to the Supreme Court’s ruling, Ocasio-Cortez sponsored a Democratic bill in 2022 aimed at federally protecting abortion rights. The discussion extends beyond politics as she pointed out the different standards and scrutiny women face compared to men regarding family planning. ‘Men run for office, or apply for jobs, without questions about their age and family plans,’ she commented, drawing attention to societal double standards.
