Allison Tilly’s Goalkeeping Mastery Leads Lemont to Championship Victory

Allison Tilly’s fearless attitude and swift adaptability turned an emergency situation into a week of triumph for Lemont. Faced with multiple injuries, Lemont entered the sectional looking for a goalkeeper. Tilly, a sophomore defender who had never played in goal, volunteered to take on the challenge. ‘I have experience in basketball, volleyball, and softball, so I felt confident,’ Tilly remarked. ‘If no one else was willing, I’d give it a shot.’

Her training began on Monday, and by Tuesday’s game, she was already showcasing her aptitude in goal. Tilly exceeded expectations on Friday night, securing Lemont’s 2-1 victory against the host Celtics during the Class 2A Providence Sectional championship in New Lenox. She made eight critical saves, demonstrating remarkable skill.

Gabriela Kuruc scored both goals for Lemont, with Madison Weil providing an assist. This victory marked Lemont’s first sectional title win since 2018. They now prepare to face Geneva on Monday at 5 p.m. in the Kankakee Supersectional, aiming to honor Coach Rick Prangen’s final season before retirement.

‘It’s a significant achievement,’ Tilly noted, acknowledging the momentous occasion. Coach Prangen’s impending retirement adds emotional weight to this championship run.

‘We knew the game would be fast-paced,’ Kuruc highlighted. Lemont’s training emphasized speed, reflected in their gameplay, especially Kuruc’s decisive goal from 30 yards out.

Top-seeded Providence responded with a goal from Aubrey Curry, leveling the score. Yet, Lemont’s quick response through Kuruc secured their win. Tilly’s heroics in goal, especially in the final minutes, preserved Lemont’s lead.

Reflecting on the intense moments, Tilly said, ‘I felt nervous, hoping there wouldn’t be too many shots.’ Despite her fears, Tilly performed exceptionally, as Coach Prangen praised her efforts. ‘She was phenomenal,’ he added.

Tilly absorbed as much coaching advice as possible during the week. Though practice overwhelmed her, the actual game brought clarity. ‘You stop overthinking and just play,’ she shared.

Tilly’s shift from field player to exceptional goalkeeper impressed teammates like Kuruc. ‘Her performance has been astounding,’ Kuruc stated.

After the game, Assistant Coach Mark Tomczak embraced Tilly, acknowledging her pivotal role in the team’s success. Tilly summed up the experience, saying, ‘I feel proud for contributing to our victory. It’s surreal.’
