Amanda Seyfried Faces Criticism Over Elizabeth Holmes Documentary

After appearing in the latest Elizabeth Holmes documentary, Amanda Seyfried found herself amidst online criticism. Seyfried appeared with Nathan Fielder in ‘You Can See Everything,’ which documented the final 34 days before Holmes started her prison sentence. Holmes entered Federal Prison Camp Bryan on May 30, 2023.

Seyfried revisited her connection to Holmes, whom she played in Hulu’s ‘The Dropout.’ The documentary, released on October 16, examined Seyfried’s evolving views on Holmes, reflecting on Holmes’ personal life and relationship with Billy Evans. Seyfried and Fielder reenacted conversations he had with Holmes after she reported to prison.

In the film, Seyfried grappled with growing sympathy for Holmes, despite Holmes challenging Seyfried’s portrayal in the Hulu series. This fueled debate among viewers and critics.

‘You Can See Everything’ Review: The Buzzy Elizabeth Holmes Documentary is Worth the Hype

Amanda Seyfried faced backlash, with accusations of hypocrisy following her participation in the documentary. One user expressed, “Amanda Seyfried defending Holmes as a victim of male manipulation until Holmes accused her… was truly gross,” illustrating the dissatisfaction of some viewers.

Other fans accused Seyfried of shifting her narrative when criticism turned to her own representation of the Theranos scandal. A viewer commented, “When she gets accused of perhaps also causing Elizabeth some degree of pain, she immediately deflects,” suggesting Seyfried engaged in emotional manipulation.

Not all reactions were negative. Some defended Seyfried, arguing her changing opinion of Holmes was integral to the documentary’s message. “Imagine walking away from this blaming Amanda Seyfried,” one user wrote, supporting the notion that changing perceptions was the documentary’s point.

Holmes was convicted in January 2022 on four federal fraud charges for misleading investors about Theranos’ technology. A jury found her guilty of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and three counts of wire fraud, related to defrauding investors.

‘You Can See Everything’ explores Holmes’ attempts to reshape her public image following Theranos’ collapse. As she faced prison, Holmes dealt with the aftermath of her conviction and public scrutiny. The film delved into Holmes’ struggle to manage life post-scandal, examining how she saw herself versus public perception.
