During Donald Trump’s first presidential term, opposing him became popular and profitable. He often seemed more like a subject of ridicule than a leader. Trump, known for his sensitivity, sought widespread admiration and celebrity status.
Today, many prominent voices face unprecedented consequences. Journalist Don Lemon spent a night in jail. “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” ended abruptly. “60 Minutes,” a significant name in television journalism, faces turmoil due to accusations of political interference.
This environment represents a less-free America. Trump recently endured setbacks, including his green Reflecting Pool incident and a military defeat. Yet his hold on the country remains evident. Many celebrities, once vocal critics, now stay silent.
Selena Gomez, granddaughter of undocumented immigrants, shared her distress over immigration policy on Instagram. Her post sparked backlash, notably from Piers Morgan and anonymous right-wing accounts, leading to its removal. Political criticism is rare at major Hollywood events. Even “Saturday Night Live” appears to have softened its stance on Trump.
Jennifer Lawrence, once outspoken, explained her current political views to The Times, saying, “Celebrities do not make a difference on who people vote for.” She questions the impact of sharing her opinions, fearing it may fuel division. Many of her peers seem to share this sentiment.
Notably, Tucker Carlson, a far-right commentator, has been more vocal against Trump than many in the #Resistance movement.
