A fire that caused an ammonia gas leak at a cold storage facility in Boyle Heights has led to health warnings regarding air quality. Authorities have issued a shelter-in-place order for residents in affected areas.
Shelter-in-Place Order
The shelter-in-place directive covers areas south of the 101 Freeway to Washington Boulevard and east of Soto Street to Indiana Street. Residents are instructed to:
- Close all windows and doors.
- Turn off air conditioning and heating systems.
- Bring all household members and pets to an interior room.
- Close any vents to the outside.
Smoke Advisory
A smoke advisory is in effect for a large area of East Los Angeles. The public is advised to limit outdoor physical activities, especially those with health issues who should stay indoors. Los Angeles County officials recommend residents exercise caution in areas like Montebello and Monterey Park. Sensitive groups are advised to stay inside, closing all windows and doors, and minimizing outdoor exposure. In case of emergencies, residents are encouraged to call 911.

The National Weather Service has forecast southwest winds of 6-12 mph continuing into the evening, which may affect air quality further.
Evacuations
Authorities evacuated a small number of people closest to the fire site to ensure their safety.
