In April, President Donald Trump announced a project to renovate the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. He hired a contractor to coat its granite basin for what he claimed would cost $1.5 million. At a Cabinet meeting, Trump criticized previous administrations, stating they spent “hundreds of millions of dollars” on the site.
Former President Barack Obama oversaw a major renovation of the pool. However, the expenses were far from Trump’s projections. According to federal records, expenses under Trump’s administration surpassed his stated $1.5 million estimate.
Reflecting Pool’s Historical Background
The reflecting pool was constructed in the 1920s, extending over 2,000 feet between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. It is a symbolic site in Washington, D.C. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech there in 1963.
Trump’s Statements vs. Facts
Trump claimed the Obama and Biden administrations spent large sums with little success. However, it is reported that Obama’s administration spent at least $34 million on a comprehensive renovation completed in 2012. No substantial repairs occurred during Biden’s term.
Details of Past Renovations
Under Obama, renovations solved stagnant water problems and addressed leakage. A new circulation system using Tidal Basin water helped in these efforts. The pool was made shallower, conserving water, while paths were paved around it.
An Associated Press report from August 2012 noted the reconstruction cost $34 million, with further contracts totaling $1.3 million related to the project.
Despite efforts, issues persisted with leaks and algae. Chuck Sams, the former director of the National Park Service, stated that a comprehensive project estimation exceeded $100 million, leading to annual cleanings instead.
Current Renovation Claims
Trump announced the renovations would involve a new industrial-grade surface in “American flag blue,” which was intended to prevent leaking. His original more expensive plans were abandoned due to estimated costs of $301 million.
During a Cabinet meeting, Trump detailed processes like steam cleaning and pebble blasting being employed to enhance durability. Reports indicate the project has involved extensive cleaning and debris removal.
Interior Department spokeswoman Katie Martin refrained from commenting on the cost discrepancies, mentioning the increased resources for timely completion ahead of significant upcoming national celebrations.
