The Atlanta Dream triumphed over the Golden State Valkyries, 79-65, on Monday night, leveling the WNBA Finals series at 1-1. Angel Reese played a pivotal role in the victory, delivering a stunning performance with 30 points and 16 rebounds. Her efforts made history as she became the youngest player to achieve significant milestones in the Finals. Reese’s contributions included an efficient 10 of 16 field goals, the conversion of her single three-pointer, and 9 of 11 free throws. She also added three assists, two blocks, and a steal.
Reese set records as the youngest player to have a 20-point, 10-rebound game and a 30-point, 15-rebound game in WNBA Finals history, as per StatMuse. She joined an elite group in WNBA postseason history, sharing the stage with renowned players like Jonquel Jones, Lisa Leslie, Candace Parker, Breanna Stewart, and A’ja Wilson.

Teammate Rhyne Howard also broke new ground by setting a WNBA Finals record for most steals in a game, with six recorded in Game 2. Notably, the Dream achieved their first-ever WNBA Finals game win, marking a significant milestone for the franchise. Atlanta had previously reached the Finals in 2010, 2011, and 2013 but was swept each time.
The current WNBA Finals follow a best-of-seven series format, adopted last year to align with the NBA. The Dream, now returning home, aim to take a 2-1 series lead over the Valkyries, who were initially slightly favored to win the championship.
Reese’s energy was evident throughout Game 2, with several online videos capturing her passionate responses. In the first quarter, she engaged in trash talk with a Golden State player, and in the third quarter, she assertively asked for the ball from her teammates after scoring and drawing a foul, aiding Atlanta’s lead.
Her standout Game 2 performance came after a close defeat in Game 1, where Atlanta lost 68-64. The loss may have driven Reese to elevate her play and equalize the series. She was supported by a strong backcourt, with Allisha Gray contributing 18 points and five rebounds, while Jordin Canada added a double-double with 13 points and 10 assists, missing a triple-double by three rebounds.
The series will continue in Atlanta for Game 3 on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 8 p.m. ET, with the Dream hosting Golden State at State Farm Arena.
