Sophie Cunningham has been in the spotlight recently. Angel Reese, however, chose a different path. She decided to let her basketball performance do the talking.
Earlier in the week, Reese claimed there were no Black Barbie dolls in her childhood. However, these dolls have existed since the late 20th century. Reese gained attention on Monday night for an unusual basketball shot at the Atlanta Dream’s “Barbie Game Day.” This event celebrated Reese’s Barbie doll likeness.
Reese’s attempt was notable throughout basketball history, not limited to just the WNBA, but across all levels, including the NBA and local courts.
Despite the shot, Reese had a solid performance in Monday’s game against the Las Vegas Aces. She scored 23 points on 10 out of 19 shooting and secured 16 rebounds.
Known as “MeBounds,” her rebounds contributed significantly, including after her unique shot.
Her on-court efforts and off-court moments, like her remarks during “Barbie Game Day,” have drawn fan attention. “I didn’t have a lot of dolls that looked like me,” Reese shared. “It’s important to have a doll that looks like you, with features like nails and hair, who can also excel on the court.”
Mattel introduced its first Black Barbie-related character, Christie, in 1968, with Black Barbie officially arriving in 1980, well before Reese’s time.
