Angela Paxton, the estranged wife of Texas GOP Senate nominee Ken Paxton, has released a new advertisement urging voters to support the Republican ticket amid her ongoing divorce. Although she does not mention Ken Paxton by name, she emphasizes voters should prioritize retaining Republican-held seats rather than focusing solely on individual candidates.
Ken Paxton faces Democratic opponent James Talarico, who leads in several recent polls. A New York Times/Siena survey reports Talarico is ahead by six points. Ken Paxton enters the race with a history of political controversies, including impeachment by the Texas House in 2023 and subsequent acquittal by the Texas Senate.
“Let’s talk about the elephant in the room,” Angela Paxton states in her ad, stressing the importance of supporting the Republican party as a whole. “In a general election, it’s not as much about the individual players on the team. It’s about getting the whole team across the finish line.”
Angela Paxton is a Republican state senator representing an area around McKinney in North Texas. Before her political career, she was a teacher and counselor. She was first elected to the Texas Senate in 2018, focusing on education, faith, and conservative policies.
The Paxton’s daughter, Mattie Hayworth, also appears in campaign ads defending her father, highlighting perceived failures in Democratic policies. In one ad, Hayworth says, “When they come after you, my dad goes after them.” This highlights the importance of family perspectives amid increasing scrutiny of Ken Paxton’s controversies.
Tight Senate Race Intensifies
Amid Angela Paxton’s advocacy, Ken Paxton’s campaign faces a challenging atmosphere. Polls indicate Talarico holds a slight lead, a significant change in a state with a long history of Republican wins. The New York Times/Siena survey details this tight race, emphasizing national implications for Senate control.
Angela Paxton’s new advertisement follows her September speech to the Texas Federation of Republican Women, where she addressed over 100 activists. She spoke of a “moral dilemma” faced by conservatives regarding candidates, urging the focus to be on retaining Republican seats.
Ken Paxton’s Political Challenges
Ken Paxton enters the election’s final weeks burdened by past controversies. His impeachment involved allegations of bribery and abuse of office. He has also contended with various other accusations throughout his career, denying any wrongdoing and framing them as politically motivated.
Despite these challenges, his victory over longtime Senator John Cornyn in the Republican primary solidified his role in Texas conservative politics. As the general election proves unexpectedly competitive, Angela Paxton and their daughter continue to make appeals to the Republican electorate.
