Apple Integrates AI into Siri Amid Leadership Transition

During the World Wide Developers Conference at Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California, CEO Tim Cook addressed how Apple is advancing its technology. On June 8, 2026, the company revealed a significant update to Siri and its operating systems, aiming for deeper integration of artificial intelligence.

Yet, despite the announcements, Apple’s share price saw a close to 2% drop. Analysts suggest the updates have potential, but consumer response remains uncertain until full release later this year.

For Siri, the overhaul follows several delays, during which Apple’s commitment to AI was questioned as other companies rapidly invested in AI technologies. Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Design, emphasized Apple’s focus on creating utility and maintaining user privacy. He noted, “Some appear to be racing forward, seemingly pursuing AI for the sake of AI without clear regard for the people— all of us— that it’s ultimately meant to serve.” Federighi assured that Apple’s AI would be customer-centric.

Despite the popularity of AI chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Siri has lagged. Apple’s new Siri AI was showcased through videotaped demos, accessible via a standalone app and integrated features in Apple devices. Its capabilities include accessing cloud networks, offering recommendations, processing user data for personalized experiences, and organizing photos.

Ben Bajarin, CEO of Creative Strategies, remarked that enhancements to Siri are welcome given its current limitations. Bajarin sees the integration of AI as fitting into various consumer activities. Analyst Francisco Jeronimo echoed this, suggesting that natural and private AI could redefine consumer expectations from devices.

Despite promising announcements, Siri AI will initially be exclusive to U.S. customers in English, with future plans for other languages. Regulatory hurdles affect availability in the European Union and China.

To aid its AI efforts, Apple is collaborating with Google, using Google’s Gemini AI model as a foundation for its systems. Daniel Newman, CEO of Futurum Group, expressed skepticism over Apple’s delivery, implying the recent announcements need proof in execution.

In addition to AI advancements, Apple introduced new parental controls for apps, addressing concerns over minors’ exposure to harmful content. This comes amid lawsuits involving AI and social media platforms.

Tim Cook’s tenure at Apple is reaching its end, and his last WWDC was marked with optimism for the company’s future. Cook announced John Ternus, Apple’s hardware development overseer, will succeed him as CEO. Cook commended Ternus for his engineering mind and leadership qualities.

Despite criticisms about Apple’s AI progress and dependency on China, Cook led Apple to significant growth, expanding services like Apple Pay and developing custom microchips. Critics have pointed to Apple’s incremental innovation rather than ground-breaking developments. Cook expressed pride in Apple’s continued mission to create enriching experiences and acknowledged contributions from Apple’s creative teams.
