Apple Reveals Siri AI at Worldwide Developers Conference

On June 8, 2026, Apple announced the overhaul of its virtual assistant, Siri, by introducing new artificial intelligence features and renaming it to Siri AI. This announcement was made at the company’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference.

Major Revamp Since Acquisition

The iPhone maker showcased how Siri AI can assist with everyday tasks such as checking the date of a concert, shopping online, or organizing events like a soccer watch party. This revamp is considered the most significant update of Siri since Apple acquired it in 2010 and integrated it into its devices the following year. With these changes, Siri AI aims to compete more directly with modern AI assistants such as ChatGPT.

Mike Rockwell, Apple’s vice president in charge of Siri engineering, stated in a keynote video that Siri AI will tap into a wide array of information sources. These include data stored on the device as well as information from the open web, enhancing its capability to answer questions and complete tasks.

AI Integration and Consumer Reception

At the conference, Apple introduced not only Siri AI but also new features such as powerful parental controls and a range of software improvements across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, visionOS, and tvOS. According to Apple, Siri is now a more capable assistant that efficiently helps users find information and complete tasks.

Apple’s push into AI chatbots comes at a time when there is a mixed consumer response to AI integration by other tech firms. For instance, Microsoft withdrew from adding AI features to its Xbox systems following consumer feedback. Nevertheless, AI chatbot apps are gaining popularity, as evidenced by the top rankings in the Apple marketplace, with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and Google Gemini being among the most downloaded.

Partnerships and Challenges

In January, Apple announced an AI partnership with Google to use Google’s Gemini for powering the new Siri version, placing Siri AI as both a competitor and a partner of Google’s offerings. Although Apple has lagged behind some tech companies in adopting AI, it introduced integration with ChatGPT in 2024 to allow iPhone users to receive chatbot responses through Siri. However, the relationship between Apple and OpenAI has faced challenges, with OpenAI expressing dissatisfaction over unmet expectations and considering legal proceedings, as reported by Bloomberg.

Distinct Features and Future Availability

Apple executives highlighted distinctive advantages of Siri AI, including the ability to search information across the user’s device, such as photos and text messages, and to create reminders or calendar entries more efficiently than third-party AI assistants. Rockwell pointed out that Siri AI’s integration into the keyboard allows for versatile use across the system, such as texting on the subway or using journaling apps.

Apple’s website lists additional use cases for Siri AI, like asking for sightseeing tips, running-related stretching advice, and brainstorming nicknames for animals.

Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, announced that Siri AI will be available later in the year on iPhones, iPads, and Macs, initially in English. Plans are underway to expand its availability to other languages, though it will not be available right away in the European Union or China due to regulatory requirements.
