Arizona Helicopter Crew Rescues Man from Overturned Truck in Floodwaters

A dramatic rescue unfolded in Arizona as a sheriff’s helicopter crew saved a man stranded on top of his overturned truck surrounded by fast-moving floodwaters. The incident occurred in Tonopah, where the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office responded to a flood emergency.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office reported that their Fox 1 aviation crew was called to a flooded area on Tuesday morning. Upon arrival, deputies found the man sitting on the overturned vehicle, while the water rapidly surged around him. Authorities released video footage showing the man perched precariously on his truck, with muddy waters rushing by.

Due to the hazardous conditions, first responders determined that reaching the man directly was too risky. They opted for a ‘hoist rescue,’ considering it the safest option. The operation, captured on video, shows a crew member being lowered from the helicopter, securing the stranded individual in a rescue harness, and then hoisting both to safety.

Once hoisted, the man was transported to the riverbank, where fire personnel awaited his arrival. Rich Dickner, the helicopter pilot, emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting the fast-rising water levels. ‘We didn’t waste much time,’ he told CBS News, highlighting how quickly the river had swollen.

During the rescue, Deputy Lindsey Smith descended approximately 80 feet from the helicopter. Despite an initial struggle to find her footing, she secured herself and executed the rescue efficiently. Authorities confirmed the entire operation took under five minutes.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office praised the aviation crew’s quick response and skill, stating, ‘Thanks to the skill and quick response of our Aviation crew, the subject was safely brought to shore.’ They commended the Fox 1 team for their exemplary work.

Flooding in the area was exacerbated by remnants of Hurricane Polo, which brought record rainfall to parts of the Desert Southwest. The Flood Control District of Maricopa County advised drivers to exercise caution, warning against crossing flooded roads and emphasizing, ‘Turn Around, Don’t Drown.’

Further information has been requested from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office regarding the incident.
