Arson Suspect Arrested After Witness Identifications in Washington Wildfire Case

Paul Child drove past a stranger twice near railroad tracks outside his Washington home. Minutes later, he noticed smoke rising, prompting him to contact authorities. This action led to the identification of a suspected arsonist in connection with a wildfire.

Newly released bodycam footage shows officers evacuating Child’s family and taking him, his grandson, and the boy’s friend for a field showup. They identified a man matching the description of the stranger. An officer mentioned the detained man had ‘a whole fanny pack full of matches,’ though the footage does not display these items.

Child and the other witnesses weren’t informed about these items before identifying the suspect.

Aaron F. Farinacci was arrested for first-degree arson tied to the Old Trails Fire in eastern Washington. According to Child, he, his grandson, and his grandson’s friend saw the man behaving suspiciously near the apparent fire origin. Child observed the man bending over, appearing to do something in the bushes. Shortly after seeing the man last, smoke began to rise about half a mile away.

Bodycam footage captures Officer Pace speaking with Child’s family about evacuation as smoke billows nearby. The officer informed them of a possible suspect detained. Despite the identification, Farinacci was initially released before being arrested again two days later, on August 3.

Farinacci reportedly faced additional arson charges for admitting to starting 25 fires since 2025. Court documents allege he used a time-delay device for the Old Trails Fire and monitored weather apps to find suitable conditions.

The fires burned across Spokane and Stevens counties, damaging a significant number of structures. By the time of his court appearance, Farinacci’s bail rose to $2 million.

The Old Trails, Fairview, and Autumn Lane fires collectively burned over 10,000 acres. Firefighters battled the blazes, while Child’s family evacuated their home.

Reflecting on his role, Child expressed regret for not preventing the fires completely but felt relieved that the suspect was off the streets.
