President Trump has been characterized as a highly persuasive figure, managing to secure electoral victories through promises that some view as questionable. As early voting unfolds for the midterms, there is a growing awareness among Americans regarding his leadership style.
Many now recognize the impact of Trump’s policies, such as tariffs and the military actions in Iran, on economic issues like rising fuel and grocery prices. According to an Associated Press-NORC Center Public Affairs Research poll from October 1, 71% of American adults disapprove of Trump’s handling of the Iran conflict. Additionally, 65% see his policies as contributing to high prices and economic difficulties.
The New York Times reported that Trump’s overall approval rating is below 40%. Despite these statistics, Trump dismisses the blame for high prices. On October 1, he claimed economic figures were at a historic high during his presidency, attributing any failures to public relations.
In response to inquiries about low poll ratings, Trump labeled the numbers as fake. This is a recurring defense, wherein he criticizes polls, news, and results that do not favor him as hoaxes. However, fact-checkers from outlets like CNN and The Washington Post have highlighted numerous false statements made by Trump, including over 30,000 during his first term.
During his 2024 campaign, Trump pledged to cut home costs and fuel prices, and to resolve international conflicts swiftly. Yet, there is skepticism about these promises. A September Economist-YouGov poll indicated only 21% of Americans believe in Trump’s financial promises if Republicans maintain congressional control.
Critics argue that Trump’s actions, such as tariffs and cuts to government services, have worsened conditions for Americans. Concerns extend to his stance on immigration, voting rights, and the press. Some suggest that any other professional with such a track record might be ousted from their role.
Looking ahead, as Trump encourages voters to see him as an influential figure in the midterms, Democrats aim to remind the public of his record. There is hope among Democrats that gaining control of Congress could lead to a new era of accountability concerning Trump’s policies.
