Austin Police Department made significant progress in addressing recent shooting incidents across the city by arresting three juveniles believed to be involved in these occurrences. The suspects, aged 15 and 17, were apprehended following a spate of shootings that began late Saturday.
Chief Lisa Davis confirmed the arrests during a press conference, stating that both suspects were already in custody by Sunday. Further developments saw a third suspect, a 16-year-old, detained after fleeing from a vehicle earlier in the day.
The violence triggered a shelter-in-place order for South Austin as the 17-year-old suspect faced an existing warrant regarding firearm theft, linked to a store where the other suspect allegedly stole a weapon. Throughout the spree, the suspects reportedly fired at various targets, including apartment complexes, homes, pedestrians, and two fire stations, causing property damage and injuries.
Austin-Travis County EMS Chief Robert Luckritz reported treating victims at multiple locations, highlighting the random nature of these acts. The order to shelter was later rescinded once the primary suspects were captured, though searches continued for the third individual involved.
Authorities noted stolen vehicles played a role during this period: the suspects drove different models, including a black or dark blue Hyundai, a gold Hyundai sedan, a silver Mazda, and a white Kia Optima. Chief Davis stressed the importance of not leaving keys or fobs in cars to prevent theft.
While officers diligently responded to shooting sites, the investigation’s complexity was evident, given the scattered crime scenes and the randomness of the events. Surveillance footage contributed to understanding the incidents, showing suspects firing from vehicles.
In response to rapidly unfolding events, Austin Mayor Kirk Watson commended the collaboration among local and regional law enforcement agencies, including the Travis County Sheriff’s Office, Manor Police Department, and Texas Department of Public Safety. He praised the prompt and effective response to the situation. Chief Davis suggested potential enhancements in investigating similar events through license plate reader technology.
