The New York Times recently published a Father’s Day guest essay that has sparked controversy. The essay, “To My Daughter, My Gender Was Never Complicated,” written by Zach Ellams, a transgender parent, was shared in comic-strip form. As a biological woman identifying as male, Ellams discussed raising a daughter while addressing gender questions.
The illustrations depict Ellams’ child asking poignant questions in daily life settings. For instance, the daughter inquires, “How long did you have breasts for, Dad?” while walking together. Another scene by a pool involves the daughter asking about mustache growth. On a playground, the daughter expresses a desire to grow a beard, leading to a conversation about gender identity.
The essay demonstrates the child’s acceptance of Ellams’ identity, which assists Ellams in embracing their own gender expression more fully. Critics, however, have criticized The Times for publishing this piece on Father’s Day, expressing concerns about its timing and message.
Katie Miller, a podcaster and former aide at the Department of Government Efficiency, commented on social media, expressing her belief that the publication’s content aims to influence children. Sean Davis, CEO of The Federalist, accused the publication of misrepresenting true fatherhood. He stated the essay focused on behavior he deemed inappropriate for the occasion.
Seth Dillon, CEO of The Babylon Bee, echoed similar sentiments about the essay. He indicated that recent events show a shift in how gender topics are approached, but some views persist.
Tim Young, a media fellow at The Heritage Foundation, criticized the publication by asserting The Times’ disapproval of traditional fathers. Additionally, President Donald Trump expressed his disdain for The New York Times on the same day, condemning their foreign coverage.
The new backlash over this essay adds to the recent string of debates surrounding The Times. Earlier issues involved critique over an opinion column by Nicholas Kristof, which received condemnation from various critics, including the Israel Foreign Ministry.
