Baseball Honors Tommy John and Bids Farewell to Justin Verlander

Baseball mourns the loss of Tommy John, a pioneer in sports medicine, who passed away at 83. Dr. Marc Siegel, a senior medical analyst, highlights the transformative impact of the ulnar collateral ligament surgery first performed on John. This procedure, now commonly known as ‘Tommy John surgery,’ has saved the careers of over 2,500 pitchers.

On a separate note, Justin Verlander made his emotional final appearance for the Detroit Tigers. The 42-year-old was pulled after 5 1/3 innings during a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch chose Verlander’s daughter, Genevieve, to remove him from the game, bringing an emotional moment as she hugged her father on the mound.

Genevieve’s embrace brought tears to Verlander, who was visibly moved. His wife, Kate Upton, watched alongside their second child. Verlander then received a touching ovation from fans at Comerica Park as he left the field with his family.

Despite injury setbacks, Verlander’s final appearance showcased his enduring skill, clocking a 95 mph fastball and striking out six batters. His career achievements include an MVP Award, three Cy Young Awards, a Triple Crown, and two World Series championships, making him a future Hall of Fame candidate.

Ryan Canfield, a digital production assistant, contributed to this report.
