Comedian and talk show host Bill Maher has openly criticized the influence of radical socialist views within the Democratic Party. During an episode of HBO’s ‘Real Time,’ Maher expressed his concerns about the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and their agenda seemingly gaining traction in mainstream politics.
Maher emphasized the importance of recognizing this shift, declaring that his vote is conditional. He stated, ‘I’m not voting for anyone who thinks the wrong side won the Cold War or cheers for the intifada like it’s the World Cup.’
‘Real Time’ host Bill Maher warned his fellow liberals about the Democratic Party being ‘colonized’ by extreme socialist views. He pointed out the irony of the situation, considering the party has historically opposed colonization. ‘The Democratic Party is what’s being colonized now,’ Maher explained.
He highlighted the efforts of two Democratic congressmen, Rep. Tom Suozzi and Rep. Adam Gray, who urged colleagues to sign a pledge asserting that Democrats are ‘capitalists, not socialists.’ This initiative has gained limited support, with only eight out of 212 Democratic members signing on.
Despite this, Maher noted that the majority of mainstream Democrats do not align with radical-left ideologies. However, the influence is noticeable, and some elected officials openly advocate for policies that dismantle policing, prisons, and borders.
Maher’s remarks follow previous statements wherein he voiced his dissatisfaction with the Democratic Party’s current trajectory. Expressing his concerns, Maher told ABC News’ Jonathan Karl that he won’t support candidates promoting what he perceives as socialist or communist ideologies.
The sentiment was mirrored by former state attorney Dave Aronberg. He suggested that while a blue wave is expected in upcoming elections, the DSA’s platform could hinder Democratic successes outside of liberal strongholds. ‘If the Democratic Party lets the DSA drive the bus, they’re driving straight off an electoral cliff,’ Aronberg commented.
Media critic Christian Toto commented on Maher’s independence, contrasting him with other liberal comedians. Toto noted that unlike many of his peers, Maher doesn’t always conform to party lines and has been vocal about it.
Maher concluded his show by stating his preference for voting for former Alaska governor Sarah Palin over DSA candidates. ‘Get your head out of your a–, I would vote for Sarah Palin before this s—,’ Maher said, criticizing the current extreme socialist stance within the party.
