Comedian and TV host Bill Maher has criticized Dr. Anthony Fauci, former Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, after Fauci’s recent Senate hearing. Maher expressed skepticism about Fauci’s explanations of the COVID-19 pandemic origins.
During an episode of HBO’s Real Time, Maher highlighted Fauci’s repeated invocation of the Fifth Amendment during the Senate hearing. Fauci reportedly cited this right against self-incrimination 111 times. Maher accused Fauci of misleading the public about the virus’s origins, which have been linked to over seven million deaths worldwide.
Maher pointed to Fauci’s initial assertions that the virus spread from animal-to-human contact at a wet market in Wuhan, China. Maher suggested that Fauci knew more, referencing entries from Fauci’s diary that allegedly show conversations with scientists doubting the official narrative.
“He was caught in actual lies,” Maher stated on his show, emphasizing the significance of understanding where and how the outbreak began.
Maher also addressed a controversial theory suggesting the virus may have accidentally leaked from a lab. Fauci faced questioning over funding for “gain-of-function” research in China, which involves altering a virus’s genetics to study its behavior. This method is contentious, with Maher acknowledging there are debates about its safety and necessity.
The World Health Organization reported in June 2025 that available evidence points to zoonotic spillover, likely from bats. Nonetheless, Maher believes the lack of open discussion about the lab leak theory stems from social, not scientific, issues.
The comedian criticized the associated racial stigma, suggesting it prevented rational debate. He observed that some feared discussing the theory might perpetuate racist stereotypes, particularly targeting Asian populations.
Maher’s critique of Fauci diverges from many in the left-leaning media who have remained supportive of the doctor. According to Curtis Houck, managing editor at NewsBusters, Maher approaches these topics transparently, contrasting with outlets that defend Fauci despite controversies surrounding his actions.
