Shark Safety Advice and Recent Incidents

Jesse Watters, a shark researcher, hosted Chris Fischer, founder of OCEARCH, to discuss the recent increase in shark attacks during the summer. Fischer highlighted several incidents, including a New York beach closure due to bull sharks, an attack on a swimmer in Queens, and a child being bitten in knee-deep water in Florida.

Fischer noted that shark populations have returned to 1960s levels, suggesting caution for beachgoers. He advised avoiding swimming in areas with active bait fish as a safety precaution.

Expansion of Silver-Cheeked Toadfish

A type of puffer fish known as the silver-cheeked toadfish is expanding its range throughout the Mediterranean, prompting warnings from local authorities. This fish, which reportedly entered the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal and thrives as sea temperatures rise, poses risks due to its toxic flesh and bone-crushing jaws.

The fish carries tetrodotoxin, a potent neurotoxin found in its flesh and organs. While it doesn’t typically attack humans, bites can occur during interaction, posing serious dangers.

Documented Human-Health Incidents

A study published in the journal Toxics reported 198 health incidents involving invasive puffer fish in the eastern Mediterranean from 2004 to 2023. Researchers noted a significant increase in incidents post-2019, including 144 non-lethal poisonings and 27 fatalities related to fish consumption.

Warnings from Greek Authorities

The Hellenic Red Cross issued a warning about the dangers of consuming the fish due to its potent neurotoxin, tetrodotoxin. Greek authorities have taken action to protect swimmers, including the establishment of floating barriers in the Gulf of Euboea.

Antonis Spanos, vice-mayor of Chalkida, emphasized the importance of citizen safety. Efforts include installing nets in the gulf to keep swimmers safe from potential threats.

Impact on Fisheries

The silver-cheeked toadfish has disrupted local fisheries, damaging nets off the coast of Crete and other Greek islands. With few natural predators in the Mediterranean, its populations are rapidly increasing. The Greek government offers compensation to fishermen to help control the nuisance.

While not all pufferfish are poisonous, those in the wild often contain tetrodotoxin. Fishermen are incentivized to catch these fish to manage their numbers and reduce risks.
