BJ’s Wholesale Club Expanding in Portage Amid Local Development

Construction is underway for the new BJ’s Wholesale Club in Portage, with its ceremonial groundbreaking held on Wednesday. Spokesperson Ryan Carney stated that the 100,000-square-foot store will employ between 100 and 150 people, offering both full-time and part-time positions.

Founded over 40 years ago in Massachusetts, BJ’s is named after Beverly Jean, a founder’s daughter. The choice of Portage, the third-largest city in Northwest Indiana, was influenced by its strategic location on the eastern edge of the Chicago market. Carney noted, “It seems like a growing community.” Across from the site, a new Target store is being constructed, echoing this growth sentiment.

Portage Redevelopment Director Dan Botich shared enthusiasm for the area’s development. With 1,200 new housing units projected over the next few years, residential growth is driving commercial investments. Consistent with Mayor Austin Bonta’s vision for expansion, plans are in motion for new community infrastructure, including a fire station and potential police substations. Botich explained, “Police have the ability to disperse their assets, but it’s always good to create a substation potential.”

The parking lot at the BJ’s site is actively being developed, reflecting the area’s booming growth seen in construction and residential demand from Illinois transplants. Botich remarked, “Portage is at a confluence of expanding industry, manufacturing, and commercial demand.” The influx of new residents bolsters commercial interest, creating a cycle of mutual growth.

Economic Development Director Andy Maletta also highlighted a steady expansion, stating, “Portage has never stopped growing.” With proven success from restaurants like Applebee’s and Texas Roadhouse, the addition of venues like Olive Garden is emerging. He emphasized Portage’s appeal due to affordable housing and higher median income facilitated by union jobs, attracting businesses along the U.S. 6 corridor.

Welcoming BJ’s Wholesale Club comes as a fresh addition to Porter County, which previously lacked wholesale warehouses, such as Costco or Sam’s Club. Maletta expressed local excitement, noting the potential impact of BJ’s presence in the area. BJ’s has been actively increasing its footprint, having opened four stores last month and aiming for 25 to 30 new clubs every two years. The Portage location is set to open in winter, alongside other sites in Frankfort, Kentucky, and several Florida cities.

Facing competition from Sam’s Club and Costco, BJ’s distinguishes itself through its grocery section, with members often completing their weekly shopping there. Carney stated that grocery savings can reach up to 20%, with memberships starting at $40 annually. Community involvement is also a priority, as BJ’s plans consistent contributions to the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana, reinforcing its role as a community partner.
