As the spotlight shines on ocean predators during Shark Week, new research indicates blacktip sharks are expanding their summer range farther north along the East Coast. This change brings them into areas where beachgoers previously encountered them less often.
Researchers from Florida Atlantic University report that rising ocean temperatures are altering the sharks’ annual migration patterns. These conditions allow the sharks to travel further north before heading south for the winter, according to FOX 35 Orlando.
For over a decade, scientists have tracked the movements of blacktip sharks using aerial surveys and satellite tags. Their findings reveal that the sharks migrate north each spring, with many reaching as far as Long Island, New York, by late summer.
Shark sightings have increased near America’s beaches as large crowds head to the shore for holidays.
As ocean conditions continue to warm, experts predict that the sharks will move even further north, spending less time in South Florida during winter. Dr. Stephen Kajiura, a professor at Florida Atlantic University, stated, “They are just like us. They like our air-conditioned temperature.” He compared their preferred water temperature to a comfortable room temperature of around 72 degrees.
There is already evidence of the northward shift, with blacktip sharks being sighted more frequently off Long Island, a region where they were historically rarer. Beachgoers are likely to see these sharks close to the shore, according to Kajiura.
In addition to climate changes, a recent Florida Atlantic University study suggests that beach nourishment projects could influence where blacktip sharks gather during their winter migration. The research, published in the Journal of Coastal Research, observed that these sharks consistently stay within about 50 meters of the shoreline.
Murky water caused by these projects might impede the sharks’ hunting abilities, potentially altering their behavior and increasing the likelihood of accidental encounters with humans. Kajiura noted that the overlap between blacktip shark distribution and areas impacted by turbidity events is significant.
While beach nourishment is crucial for protecting coastlines from erosion, these findings underscore the importance of understanding their effects on marine life.
Despite the changes in migration patterns, Kajiura reassures that shark encounters remain rare and advises beachgoers not to let this research deter them from enjoying Florida’s beautiful beaches.
