Bob Iger, Disney’s experienced CEO, and Joshua Kushner, a venture capitalist, have made headlines with their latest acquisition. The duo is purchasing the Los Angeles Lakers from Mark Walter’s ownership group for an impressive $12.5 billion. This transaction marks a significant moment in sports history, as well as in the business world.

Less than a year following Mark Walter’s purchase of the Lakers for a record-breaking $10 billion, he is selling the iconic NBA franchise at a premium. This development follows reports of a federal investigation into Walter’s financial dealings, particularly concerning related-party transactions. These transactions, while sometimes legitimate, often require detailed inspection due to possible conflicts of interest.

Kushner, known for founding Thrive Capital, and Iger expressed their excitement about taking on this stewardship. In a statement to ESPN, they emphasized their dedication as lifelong NBA enthusiasts and the honor they feel in managing one of the world’s most legendary sports franchises.

Willow Bay, alongside her husband Bob Iger, also made headlines for their investment in another Los Angeles sports entity: Angel City Football Club. Together, they invested $50 million to strengthen the women’s soccer club, reflecting their commitment to promoting sports culture. This investment is still subject to approval by the National Women’s Soccer League.

The acquisition of the Lakers by Iger and Kushner represents a pivotal moment, not only due to the record financial figures but also because it places two influential figures at the helm of one of sports’ most cherished teams.
