Recently released body camera footage exposes dramatic moments involving an alleged carjacking suspect in Maryland. The suspect reportedly drove towards police officers, striking an officer and multiple vehicles, which led to officers opening fire as she tried to escape.
On May 7 at approximately 9 p.m., Anne Arundel County police responded to a hit-and-run report near North Crain Highway and 11th Avenue in Glen Burnie. Upon arrival, they discovered a woman had crashed her vehicle into another vehicle and forcibly took a car belonging to a family member who had come to assist her.
Jasmin L. Cooper, 28, was later found inside the car on the 8500 block of Severn. In the footage, officers are shown aiming their weapons at Cooper and shouting for her to “turn the car off” and “get out of the car.” Although she lifted her hands from the steering wheel, she did not exit the vehicle.
“So what, she stole her son’s car?” an officer remarked in the video.
Soon after, Cooper accelerated out of the parking space, forcing officers to scramble out of her path.
According to police reports, Cooper drove towards officers, hit an officer, and collided with two patrol cars and another vehicle. This prompted officers to fire their weapons, striking her.
Additional officers witnessed Cooper turning onto Reece Road. She crashed into another car near Reece Road and Telegraph Road, attempting to enter another occupied vehicle before being apprehended. The video shows Cooper lying handcuffed on the ground while officers applied bandages to her wound sustained during the parking lot incident.
Cooper faces charges including carjacking, attempted carjacking, multiple counts of reckless endangerment, and first- and second-degree assault. Both Cooper and the officer she struck received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
