A man recklessly driving through San Diego led police on a wild chase that ended on a busy beach, surprising early-morning visitors. The incident occurred on a Sunday, beginning around 7:30 a.m. when the San Diego Police received multiple reports of a driver speeding through the Pacific Beach area.
Witnesses reported seeing a tan or gold Nissan Frontier spinning out in parking lots, nearly crashing into other cars and hitting curbs and a wall. Police quickly arrived and saw the vehicle heading oceanward. Attempts to stop the vehicle were unsuccessful as the driver fled, initiating a prolonged pursuit.
During the chase, the driver displayed increasing disregard for public safety. At one point, officers decided to stop the pursuit to avoid further risk. A second attempt to stop the suspect also failed. The vehicle was then considered part of a felony case for evading police, prompting officers to intensify their search efforts.
The police eventually relocated the suspect vehicle but did not engage again until the department’s helicopter, known as Airborne Law Enforcement (ABLE), was in position. With the helicopter tracking from above, officers observed the vehicle driving onto the sand toward the water.
Beachgoers watched as officers, with the helicopter’s aid, converged on the beach to arrest the driver. Identified as 25-year-old Griffin Charles Foy, the suspect was seen surrendering outside the truck with his hands in the air. A police K-9 was present but was not used during the arrest.
San Diego Police conducted a high-risk vehicle stop due to the suspect’s alleged conduct and danger to public safety. Foy faced charges for felony evading an officer with reckless disregard for safety, resisting arrest, and driving under the influence. He was booked into San Diego Central Jail without further incident.
Despite the dramatic nature of the pursuit, no injuries occurred. This highlights the importance of police protocols in apprehending dangerous suspects without harm to the public. The event was widely reported, embodying the unpredictable risks police face in their duties.
