Brandon Aiyuk is taking steps to return to the NFL. His initial action involves filing for reinstatement with the San Francisco 49ers, who placed him on the reserve/left squad list last year. Aiyuk submitted this paperwork on Wednesday, according to his agent, Drew Rosenhaus.
The wide receiver has not played an NFL game since tearing his ACL and MCL in October 2024. He aims to report to the team’s training facility on Friday. Despite his efforts, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has shown little interest in Aiyuk’s return.
“None. I have no expectation. I’ve kind of moved on with that mentally,” Shanahan commented when asked about Aiyuk’s filing.
Although the team is dealing with several wide receiver injuries at the start of the 2026 season, they have shown reluctance to reinstate Aiyuk. The 49ers have the option to reinstate him with the intent to trade before next week’s deadline, or release him.
The 49ers have started the 2026 season with a 6-1 record, with their sole loss against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 7. After a bye in Week 8, they are preparing for a Week 9 game against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.
