Dallas Cowboys’ Challenges and Coach Schottenheimer’s Accountability

The Dallas Cowboys have had a rough start to the 2026 NFL season, with a 3-5 record following a surprising defeat by the Arizona Cardinals last weekend. Despite having a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter at AT&T Stadium, the Cowboys allowed Cardinals’ backup quarterback Gardner Minshew to pass for 188 yards and three touchdowns, resulting in an overtime loss.

In the past four games, Dallas has won only once, with their sole victory against the Philadelphia Eagles, who were dealing with injuries. Sunday’s loss to Arizona heightened criticism of Cowboys’ head coach Brian Schottenheimer.

During a press meeting on Wednesday, Schottenheimer admitted his role in the team’s challenges. “It’s not an effort issue. It’s an execution issue. That starts with me as the head coach,” Schottenheimer stated, according to Jon Machota of The Athletic. Schottenheimer emphasized the need for cleaner execution, explaining, “I’m responsible for everything that happens here. Our execution has to be cleaner. We have to be able to put some of these close games away that we’ve unfortunately let slip away from us. And that comes down to execution.”

The Cowboys aim to regain their footing in the coming weekend during their Week 9 game against the Indianapolis Colts. This matchup is set to begin at 1 p.m. ET in Indianapolis.
