Brazil Suffers Early World Cup Exit Following Penalty Miss

On Sunday, July 5, Brazil faced Norway in the Round-of-16 match of the 2026 FIFA men’s World Cup. Brazil earned a penalty in the 14th minute, offering them a chance to lead early. Surprisingly, Bruno Guimarães, not Vinícius Júnior, took the penalty. Norwegian goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland saved the kick, intensifying scrutiny over the decision.

The match remained tight, and Brazil had multiple scoring opportunities. However, Guimarães’ missed penalty became significant in their 2-1 loss to Norway. Nyland’s performance was standout, making crucial saves. It’s uncertain if Vinícius Júnior would have succeeded, but speculation lingers.

Post-match, Brazil’s coach Carlo Ancelotti explained the penalty decision. “We compiled statistics, showing Raphinha as the best player available, but due to injuries, Guimarães was chosen,” he said. Raphinha had suffered a hamstring injury earlier in the tournament, missing several matches. Although available, he didn’t play against Norway. Neymar, another top choice, entered the game in the 67th minute and scored a late penalty in stoppage time. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to alter the outcome.

Ancelotti commented on Norway’s strategy, noting their attempt to control the game’s pace. “They kept possession low, and we had trouble pressing high,” he stated. Subsequently, Erling Haaland scored twice, netting goals in the 79th and 90th minutes, securing Norway’s historic advancement to the quarterfinals. They will face either England or Mexico on July 11.

This loss marks Brazil’s earliest World Cup exit since 1990. Despite having won the tournament five times, Brazil faces at least a 28-year title drought.
