COVID-19 Infections Increase Nationwide According to CDC

COVID-19 infections are reportedly on the rise across nearly the entire United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provided their latest epidemic modeling, highlighting this concerning trend.

Growing Cases Nationwide

As of August 12, the CDC estimates show infection growth in 50 states and the District of Columbia. Iowa stands out as the only state where data is insufficient to determine a current trend. This marks a significant shift compared to just a few weeks ago; on July 22, 37 states reported growth or likely growth in infections, while 11 states showed stable transmission rates.

Now, the once stable areas have largely disappeared from the map. The summer COVID wave, which began in the South and West around July, is now evident nationwide.

Current CDC Model Findings

The Current Epidemic Trends model by the CDC categorizes 47 states as “Growing” in infection rates. New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and the District of Columbia are labeled “Likely Growing.” No states are noted as “Not Changing,” “Declining,” or “Likely Declining.” Many large states like California, Texas, and Florida show noticeable growth in cases, and this trend extends across the Midwest, Northeast, South, and Mountain West.

The model does not report how many Americans currently have COVID-19. Instead, it assesses whether transmission is on an upward or downward trend, often detecting changes before traditional data sources.

Expert Opinions on COVID-19 Trends

Andrew Pekosz, a professor of molecular microbiology and immunology at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, stated that the pattern aligns with past observations of late summer to early fall spikes in COVID-19 cases. He noted, “Cases are increasing at a relatively steady pace.” This increase does not suggest a dramatic surge, but indicates the disease entering a “seasonal” phase.

Pekosz emphasized the importance of booster shots, noting prevention remains key in managing the disease. He also suggested checking local pharmacies for antivirals and staying updated on influenza and RSV vaccinations.

Peter Chin-Hong, a professor and infectious disease expert at the University of California, San Francisco, mentioned that although there is a national wave of infections, this does not necessarily correlate with severe illness due to widespread immunity. He advised paying attention to protecting vulnerable groups like the elderly, pregnant individuals, the severely immunocompromised, and very young children.

Legislative Response and Future Directions

The CDC’s estimates come as lawmakers reassess the federal response to the pandemic. The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee has recently conducted hearings on COVID-19-era decisions, with testimonies including former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci.

While the CDC bases their estimates on surveillance modeling rather than direct case counts, the trend is evident: COVID-19 is spreading in nearly every part of the country.
