Brittany Spears faced difficulties during a driving under the influence incident in March when she refused to exit her BMW for approximately 10 minutes. When she did comply, law enforcement reported that she smelled of alcohol and exhibited signs of intoxication during field sobriety tests. The California Highway Patrol documented her rapid and slurred speech, unsteady gait, and fidgety behavior. Notably, her mood shifted from confrontational to compliant, with sporadic use of a British accent.
Spears claimed to have consumed only one mimosa earlier in the day, yet alleged she could consume four bottles of wine and remain composed. Her breathalyzer results showed a blood alcohol level of .05 and .06, both below California’s legal limit of .08. However, officers discovered a bottle of Adderall in her possession without a prescription. She also provided a blood sample for drug testing, with results not included in the report.
A Spears representative did not immediately respond to inquiries. The pop icon was stopped for speeding and swerving on U.S. 101 near the Los Angeles County line on March 4. Initially, she refused to leave her vehicle, citing past pranks and harassment fears, coupled with a desire to remain in the car for safety. She eventually proposed going to her residence to cooperate.
After being cuffed and taken to jail, Spears was released on bail hours later. Subsequently, she checked into a rehabilitation facility. On May 4, she pleaded guilty to reckless driving involving alcohol and drugs, avoiding further jail time. Ventura County prosecutors noted this was standard for first-time offenders with no accidents or high blood-alcohol levels.
Her attorney, Michael Goldstein, stated that although no one is pleased to plead guilty, resolving the issues was satisfactory under the circumstances. Spears rose to fame in the 1990s and 2000s with multiple hit albums and singles such as “Toxic” and “…Baby One More Time.” Her private life became a frequent tabloid target as she contended with mental health issues and relentless media coverage.
For nearly 14 years, she lived under a conservatorship largely managed by her father until she gained her independence in 2021. Following this, Spears has married, divorced, and authored a bestselling memoir, “The Woman in Me.”
