WNBA star Brittney Griner and her wife, Cherelle Griner, are concluding their eight-year marriage. Brittney filed for divorce in Georgia’s Fulton County, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The couple, who were married in 2018, share a 2-year-old son. Brittney Griner cited the marriage as ‘irretrievably broken’ in court documents, noting the separation date as July 24.
In 2022, Brittney Griner was detained in Russia after officials discovered vape cartridges with cannabis oil in her luggage. She faced charges of smuggling narcotic drugs into Russia, leading to a nine-year sentence in a Russian penal colony. Cherelle, who is an attorney, actively worked for Brittney’s release.
The WNBA All-Star gained her freedom through a U.S.-Russia prisoner exchange in December 2022.
