Caitlin Clark, known for her outstanding performances in the WNBA, made her long-awaited senior international debut with Team USA at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup. Despite the anticipation, Clark did not start in the match against China. Coach Kara Lawson chose Chelsea Gray and Jackie Young as the starting guards, alongside Breanna Stewart, Kahleah Copper, and Napheesa Collier.
Gray played a key role in the team’s 2022 World Cup victory, while Young, although not part of the previous squad, is considered one of the top guards in the WNBA. Clark entered the game midway through the first quarter, contributing significantly as her teammates built an early lead. She ended the quarter with a layup, four assists, and a rebound.
Coach Lawson praised Clark’s performance and adaptability, emphasizing her competitive nature and high-level understanding of the game. Clark was already in exceptional form, having set WNBA records in August. She scored or assisted on 44.7 points per game, a monthly record. Clark also became the first WNBA player to achieve back-to-back games with over 30 points and 10 assists.
In her standout performances, she scored 34 points with 12 assists against the Connecticut Sun and followed with 37 points and 10 assists against the Chicago Sky. Her August achievements included five games with at least 20 points and 10 assists, unmatched in recent seasons.
Despite Clark’s talent, Lawson selected more experienced players to start the tournament. As Clark continues to impress, her role could expand further. Other notable players off the bench include Angel Reese and Paige Bueckers.
