Before the Monday Night Football game featuring the Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles, the national anthem performance took an unexpected turn. The Mariachi Herencia de México, a Mexican mariachi band, performed the “Star-Spangled Banner” while players, coaches, and others lined the sidelines. However, Caleb Williams, the Bears’ quarterback, stood out for his actions during this moment.
Williams, who recently suffered a hamstring strain during a game against the Minnesota Vikings, was seen pacing along the Bears sideline. Despite not playing due to his injury, his movement during the anthem raised eyebrows. Many viewers noticed his pacing on the ESPN national broadcast.
The concern stems from the national anthem’s Code of Conduct. The code, available on a government website, clearly states that during the anthem, individuals should stand at attention, face the flag, and place their right hand over their heart. This has been the standard since 1942, with an amendment in 1976 specifying further conduct involving wearing headdresses.
Williams’ actions drew mixed reactions. Some saw it as a sign of disrespect, while others considered it a minor oversight. His previous actions, such as chatting during an anthem last season, contribute to the debate.
Social media reactions were split. While some criticized his behavior, others shrugged it off. The focus will eventually shift back to his performance on the field, but for now, his conduct during the anthem garners attention.
Armando Salguero, Senior NFL Writer at OutKick, commented on the situation, noting the mixed public reaction and taking into account the role of traditional education in understanding American customs.
