A California father, Sam Dogen, had an unexpected encounter with park rangers while playing tennis with his children. The San Francisco resident aimed to spend an enjoyable afternoon at Golden Gate Heights Park with his 6-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son after returning from a family trip to Hawaii. They were just getting over jet lag, enjoying the sunshine, and engaging in tennis, a routine activity for them.
However, the leisure turned into a questioning session when two rangers from the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department approached them about whether Dogen possessed a permit to teach tennis. Dogen expressed disbelief at the situation, highlighting that he was merely playing with his children. The interaction ended peacefully after his son clarified the situation by confirming Dogen was his father. Although no citation was issued, one ranger mentioned that a penalty for teaching without a permit could have been $192.
Dogen later discussed the incident with Fox News Digital, emphasizing the encounter as an educational warning rather than a punitive measure. He questioned the necessity of the intervention, especially since no one was waiting for the courts. According to a department spokesperson, Tamara Aparton, such interactions are routine to ensure compliance with rules regarding paid instruction on public courts, which require permits.
Understanding the need for regulation, Dogen acknowledged the city’s purpose in checking the commercial use of courts. However, he urged authorities to differentiate between parents supervising their children and commercial instructors. Raising kids in expensive cities like San Francisco is challenging, he noted, and encounters with unfriendly law enforcement only increase the difficulty.
During the interaction, Dogen prioritized keeping the experience calm since his daughter and son were nearby. He humorously considered carrying his children’s birth certificates to avoid similar situations in the future, asserting that getting a permit to guide his children isn’t necessary.
His wish is for San Francisco to adopt a more family-friendly stance in enforcing park regulations, making it a welcoming environment for families. He noted the irony that teaching one’s own kids tennis could nearly lead to a steep fine. This incident sheds light on the tension between regulatory practices and family-friendly settings.
