California gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer, a Democrat, shared a video on social media featuring transgender athlete AB Hernandez. The video highlighted Steyer’s support for Hernandez as the athlete aims to win new state titles in girls’ track and field. The post quickly garnered widespread attention on social media, drawing mixed responses.

Supporters of trans rights, including comedian Stacy Cay, praised Steyer’s stance. Conversely, criticism arose, particularly from right-wing social media arenas. Steve Hilton, a Republican candidate for governor, criticized Steyer during an interview with Fox News Digital. He argued that Steyer’s views on trans athletes are disconnected from the beliefs of many Californian families and youth.

Hernandez addressed the challenges of being “outed” and “doxed” in the video. Steyer emphasized the importance of protection, stating his commitment as a gubernatorial candidate to safeguard Californians. He expressed pride in Hernandez’s achievements and determination.

Subsequently, Hernandez advanced to the final round of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) championships. Hernandez took first place in the preliminary long jump and triple jump events. CIF has implemented a pilot program allowing female athletes finishing behind Hernandez to share podium spots. This policy will continue in the upcoming state finals.

The state finals are set for Saturday night, when Hernandez will attempt to reach the top of the podium one last time as a high school student.
