California’s gubernatorial race witnessed both candidates delivering speeches that hinted at the core issues likely to feature in the upcoming November election to succeed Governor Gavin Newsom.
Xavier Becerra’s Approach
Xavier Becerra, representing the Democratic Party, addressed the National Assn. of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials conference in Los Angeles. He linked his Republican opponent Steve Hilton to former President Trump. Becerra’s speech focused on defending California’s policies. Without mentioning names, he labeled Trump as a “false” prophet, criticizing the continuation of U.S. attacks on Iran and rising gasoline prices.
“We don’t need people who make a promise to end a war in one day, and today, we still fight it and others,” Becerra stated.
Becerra emphasized that California does not need leaders aligned with such “prophets and worse.”
Steve Hilton’s Perspective
Steve Hilton, a Republican, and former Fox News commentator, focused on his immigrant roots and small business challenges in California. He acknowledged his endorsement from Trump briefly, and then shifted the conversation to state regulations affecting small businesses.
“That story of the immigrant aspiration, climbing the ladder of opportunity in a new country, that is my story,” Hilton noted.
Hilton shared his journey from Hungary to the UK and eventually to California, emphasizing his experience in running restaurants and advocating for working-class Californians. He positioned himself as someone who is not bound by ideologies and seeks to provide equal opportunities for all residents.
Sparks at the Conference
Becerra and Hilton shared the stage at this conference for the first time following the June 2 primary. Becerra had secured 28% of the vote, whereas Hilton obtained 24.6%. With Republicans comprising only a quarter of the registered voters, Hilton’s chances might face challenges.
Becerra humorously criticized Hilton over an incident involving street tacos, highlighting cultural nuances.
Responses and Challenges Ahead
In response to Becerra’s remarks, Hilton remarked that Becerra’s comments would not resolve pressing issues like gas prices or housing costs. He advocated for practical changes and criticized long-standing political approaches.
The conference also featured addresses from Newsom and Senator Alex Padilla, discussing the broader issues of democracy and inclusion alongside the candidates’ speeches.
