California Senator Scott Wiener Confronted by Pro-Palestinian Activists

California state Senator Scott Wiener faced pro-Palestinian demonstrators at San Francisco’s Trans March due to his stance on Israel and Gaza. Video footage shared widely online shows activists surrounding Wiener, urging him to leave, and criticizing his position on Gaza.

The confrontation occurred during San Francisco’s Trans March, a community-led transgender rights rally. Wiener left the event citing physical intimidation and safety concerns after his own account detailed verbal and physical harassment, including direct physical contact.

Senator Wiener explained the incident on social media, describing how a group surrounded and ran up to him, prompting his departure from the park. This marked his first absence from participating in the annual march.

Wiener recounted derogatory statements made about his Israeli connections and noted their extremity and falsehood. He also mentioned another recent incident involving verbal abuse in a bar. In his response, Wiener emphasized that harassment over disagreement crosses a boundary.

Wiener’s office referred inquiries to his online statement. Newsweek contacted relevant parties outside of normal working hours for comment. The confrontation is set against Wiener’s campaign to succeed Nancy Pelosi in California’s 11th Congressional District. This highly contested race has amplified scrutiny on Wiener’s policies related to housing, LGBTQ rights, and the Israel-Gaza conflict.

The footage recorded at the Trans March features comments recognizing Wiener’s support for transgender issues but condemning his stance on Gaza. Despite his positive record on trans rights, those confronting him insisted he no longer belonged at the event due to his views on Gaza.

A pro-LGBTQ individual posted online about the confrontation, framing it as the first occasion Wiener was forced out of the march. While recognizing his legislative contributions, the post criticized him as supporting genocide.

Public reaction to the confrontation crossed political lines, with some conservatives citing it as evidence of division within the Democratic Party. Amy Reichert commented on the internal conflicts, suggesting the far-left socialist wing is dominant and that moderate Democrats might face increasing challenges.

Former mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt referenced Wiener’s past criticisms in the context of this confrontation, attributing his current situation to mistakes from Democratic leadership.

The Combat Antisemitism Movement shared the footage and emphasized Wiener’s status as a Jewish lawmaker and Pelosi’s successor candidate, highlighting the anti-Israel sentiments expressed by demonstrators.

Kevin Mullin, Democratic U.S. representative for California’s 15th District, condemned the behavior towards Wiener, asserting that harassment and violence have no place in political discourse.

Wiener’s position on Gaza evolved over time. Initially critical of Israeli policies, he later publicly declared his view that Israel committed genocide in Gaza. His use of the term ‘genocide’ reflected changed perceptions and acknowledgment of the devastation in Gaza despite its painful associations for Jewish communities.

Despite accusations, Wiener remains supportive of Israel’s existence, advocating for defense funding like Iron Dome while opposing offensive arms to governments not committed to peace.

Throughout his tenure, Wiener has championed numerous LGBTQ rights initiatives. These include legislation establishing California as a refuge for transgender individuals and extending protections against discrimination.

Wiener’s legislative record includes measures improving access to HIV prevention, safeguarding LGBTQ seniors in care facilities, and enabling nonbinary gender identification on official documents.
