Cape Verde’s Remarkable Run at the World Cup

Since the start of this World Cup, many have become acquainted with Cape Verde, a small nation located off Africa’s west coast. The team made an impressive entry by securing a draw against Spain in the opening match. Cape Verde went on to draw against Uruguay and Saudi Arabia, becoming the smallest nation to ever reach the World Cup knockout stage. Their next challenge was against Argentina in the round of 32.

The match between Cape Verde and Argentina was seen as a modern David vs. Goliath encounter. It represented the largest difference in world rankings in the knockout round, with Argentina at second and Cape Verde at 59th. Argentina emerged victorious with a 3-2 win in extra time, concluding a thrilling contest. Argentina scored twice in extra time, with the deciding goal coming from a Diney Borges own goal in the 111th minute.

The game became a narrative of two seasoned players: Argentina’s 39-year-old Lionel Messi and Cape Verde’s 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha. Messi opened the scoring in the 29th minute with a striking move. After receiving a pass, he maneuvered past the defense and sent the ball soaring into the net.

This goal was Messi’s seventh in the tournament and his 20th in World Cup history, extending his record. During this World Cup, Messi began with a hat trick against Algeria and continued with two goals against Austria and one more against Jordan. Despite multiple chances in the second half, Vozinha thwarted Messi’s attempts.

Vozinha, like Messi, is in the latter stages of his career. He gained fame in this tournament, notably with a clean sheet against Spain. While Argentina’s team comprises players from top global leagues, Vozinha has played for clubs in Cyprus and Slovakia. Although Cape Verde managed to withstand Argentina’s attacks for a time, the pressure proved too much.

In extra time’s early minutes, Argentina took a lead after Messi’s corner led to a goal by Lisandro Martínez. Cape Verde countered with Sidny Lopes Cabral’s stunning equalizer, a shot that curled into the net’s top right corner. Vozinha continued to defend valiantly, making significant saves, including one on another Messi shot.

However, Argentina’s winning goal was a heartbreaking moment as it came off an own goal. The contest ended with Argentina ahead by a single goal, closing the gap in rankings between teams. This match stands as a testament to two unforgettable players in World Cup history.
