Libertyville’s Carson Holmes has navigated a challenging path. As a senior left fielder and a key player for the defending Class 4A state champion Wildcats, his experience is invaluable to his less seasoned teammates. Holmes takes on this role with enthusiasm. “You want to be that person when the moment calls,” he stated. “We’ll face difficult games ahead. In tough times, it’s important to rally and remind the team that support is mutual.”
Playing third in the lineup, the 6-foot, 195-pound Holmes plays a crucial role, especially highlighted when Libertyville, seeded at the top, defeated eighth-seeded Stevenson 13-3 in the Class 4A Hoffman Estates Regional championship.
During the match, senior right-hander Chase Lockwood, committed to Illinois State, held Stevenson scoreless over four innings. The Wildcats, showcasing a broad offensive strategy, will next face fourth-seeded Mundelein in the sectional semifinals.
The Wildcats scored nine runs in the third inning, benefiting from seven walks, three hit batters, and a mistake. Holmes was crucial with a two-run single. “I aimed for a good pitch and connected well,” Holmes reflected. “We kept consistent, avoided selfish play, and when offered, we opted for strategic walks.”
Holmes also walked twice and was hit by a pitch against Stevenson. His postseason record last season included a .500 batting average and a memorable home run. Coach Matt Thompson remarked, “We’re hoping Carson’s skills shine again. With his great swing and hands, batting third has been ideal for him. We’ve always had faith in him.”
Following the graduation of three Division I recruits, the Wildcats have adapted a lineup centered around Holmes. He values his role as an offensive driver. “I bat for the team, focusing on each ball,” he explained.
This season, Holmes entered playoffs with a .276 average, two home runs, and 23 RBIs, despite past difficulties. “I’ve seen highs and lows. Staying positive and ready for each pitch helps,” he acknowledged. “Ultimately, team success matters more than personal achievement.”
Holmes’s influence extends beyond hitting. “In the outfield, he’s our vocal leader,” senior right fielder Jack Cenar shared. “His communication ensures effective play-making. He’s a vital, comprehensive player.”
A versatile athlete, Holmes was also a starter for the Libertyville football team. “Playing baseball is incredibly enjoyable,” he expressed. “Winning regionals motivates us for what’s next.”
