Italian basketball star Cecilia Zandalasini expressed frustration with FIBA officials following Italy’s narrow loss to the U.S. in the Women’s World Cup. The game ended with a 55-52 score on Sunday, leaving Italy short of a victory.

Zandalasini attempted to tie the game with a 3-pointer in the final moments. As she maneuvered for space, defended by Jackie Young, she reacted as if Young had made contact with her face. Despite this, no foul was called, forcing Zandalasini to take a contested shot, which she missed.

After the game, Zandalasini confronted the referees vocally, requiring intervention from staff members to de-escalate the situation. Later, she publicly expressed regret for her actions.

I would like to apologize for the way I reacted, she stated at a postgame press conference. It wasn’t sportsmanship at all. I feel embarrassed. I just wanted to say that out loud and to whoever watches.

Zandalasini ended the game scoring 14 points and securing seven rebounds over 27 minutes. Italy challenged the U.S. throughout the game, though the American team effectively used interior play to draw fouls and gain points from the free-throw line.
