Hollywood celebrities and activists have marked America’s 250th anniversary with a video campaign encouraging Americans to oppose President Donald Trump’s administration. The campaign debuted on Variety and features well-known figures like Mark Ruffalo, Sarah Jessica Parker, Ted Danson, and Judd Apatow reciting rules from Timothy Snyder’s book, On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century.
Timothy Snyder, an author and historian, began the video with a warning about the upcoming midterm elections. He expressed concern about the direction voters might take, presenting it as a critical point for the country. Snyder emphasized the significance of the elections, remarking that they could lead the nation toward improvement or decline.
During the video, celebrities read lines from Snyder’s book about resisting tyranny. Leslie Odom Jr., Sheryl Lee Ralph, and Holland Taylor voiced the advice, “Do not obey in advance.” Isabel Allende and Lisa Rinna underscored the directive, “Beware of the one-party state.”
Mark Ruffalo, known for his role in Avengers, participated in the video due to his critical stance on Trump. He told Variety his hope of shifting from a government focused on wealth and power towards one that centers on young people’s needs and dreams. Ruffalo’s aspiration is for America to move toward its promising future rather than repeating past mistakes.
In a statement, Ruffalo advocated for closing the wealth gap, cherishing the planet, and embracing Indigenous wisdom. He criticized the colonial mindset of land theft and materialism, urging respect for all beings and circular economies.
Timothy Snyder shared the video on social media, stating, “To celebrate a rebellion is to know that, from a flawed world, we can create a better America.” He criticized the official anniversary celebrations, marking them as threats to liberty, due to arbitrary rule and corruption.
The video included various participants alongside Ruffalo, such as Isabel Allende, Judd Apatow, and Joan Baez. Fox News Digital reached out to the White House for comment but did not receive an immediate response.
