Celebrity Support Boosts Democratic Candidate James Talarico’s Texas Senate Campaign

James Talarico Gathers Celebrity Endorsements for Senate Bid

Democratic candidate James Talarico is leveraging a wide range of celebrity endorsements in his campaign to win a U.S. Senate seat in Texas, aiming to become the first Democrat elected to this position since 1988. Notable supporters include businessman Mark Cuban, science communicator Bill Nye, and Eagles co-founder Don Henley, among other prominent personalities. These endorsements have translated into substantial campaign contributions, appearances, and promotional efforts favoring Talarico.

Talarico’s approach has resulted in historic fundraising records, but it has also served as fodder for criticism from opposing Republicans. They argue that Talarico’s celebrity support indicates that he aligns more with California than with Texas. This perspective was echoed by the Republican National Committee, which capitalized on the differences between Talarico’s support base and typical Texan voters.

Recent Polling on Talarico vs. Paxton

Leading into the voting period from October 19 to October 30, Talarico holds a slight edge. A New York Times/Siena College poll conducted from September 21 to 30 showed Talarico with 51% compared to Republican opponent Ken Paxton’s 45% among 615 likely voters, with a margin of error of 4.5 percentage points. Similarly, a Fox News poll collected by Beacon Research and Shaw & Company displayed a tighter race, with Talarico at 51% and Paxton at 49%, which fell within the survey’s margin of error.

Paxton’s campaign counters these statistics with internal polling data, suggesting he leads Talarico by 48% to 45%. Historically, the race has remained close, with previous polls showcasing fluctuating leads between both candidates.

Financial Backing and Celebrity Contributions

Talarico’s campaign announced raising $27 million in the first quarter of 2026, a record-breaking amount for a Senate candidate. Contributions from small donors primarily fueled this sum, although filings revealed contributions from celebrities in the entertainment and music industries. High-profile supporters included Damon Lindelof, the co-creator of Lost, and Holland Taylor, known for her stage portrayal of former Texas Governor Ann Richards.

The campaign underscores a narrative that the donor base seeks to restore Texas politics to favor working people, juxtaposed against Republican claims that the candidate feels more aligned with liberal California.

Mark Cuban’s Endorsement

Mark Cuban, previous owner of the Dallas Mavericks, stands out as a prominent ally. Cuban shared his support on the Pivot podcast, describing Talarico as an honest candidate. He appeared with Talarico at a live event in Fort Worth and expressed belief in his integrity, although he stopped short of a formal endorsement.

Bill Nye’s Advocacy for Talarico

Bill Nye promoted Talarico in a campaign video released on September 25, emphasizing Talarico’s educational background as a former middle school teacher in San Antonio. Nye has encouraged supporters to rally behind the candidate, underscoring the importance of science and education.

The Chicks and Other Celebrity Support

The Dallas-formed country trio, The Chicks, showcased their support via social media, wearing T-shirts labeled “Talafreako,” playfully reclaiming terminology used by Paxton against Talarico during his runoff. Additional contributors include Eagles co-founder Don Henley, who backed Talarico financially.

Significance of the Texas Senate Race

The Texas seat represents a strategic opportunity for Democrats to contest their path to regaining Senate control. With Republicans holding a 53-47 majority, the Democrats must secure four additional seats for outright control or three to leverage a Vice President tie-breaking vote. Talarico’s efforts have focused on enveloping cross-party support, navigating criticism while gaining financial endorsements and coalition initiations to strengthen his campaign.

Historically, Texas has lacked a Democratic U.S. Senator since 1993. Previous Democratic candidates came close, exemplified by Beto O’Rourke’s narrow 2018 defeat to Ted Cruz. Paxton’s victory in the Republican runoff against John Cornyn created potential vulnerability, igniting opportunities for Democrat gains.
