The Colorado Buffaloes have faced three consecutive defeats after a promising 2-0 start, prompting questions about Deion Sanders’ future as head coach. Dan Dakich voiced his skepticism on “Don’t @ Me,” suggesting the “Deion experiment” is faltering.
“The truth of the matter is this is a mess,” Dakich remarked during the podcast. He observed that while Sanders’ team initially showed promise, it soon became apparent that the structure wasn’t solid.
One key issue Dakich highlighted is the respect—or lack thereof—among the players for Sanders and his coaching staff. This concern came into focus after a devastating 41-7 loss to Northwestern. During this match, Sanders dismissed several players after they were caught laughing in the locker room, despite the poor performance. Videos also emerged of players disparaging Northwestern’s crowd size.
Dakich criticized the team environment under Sanders, asserting, “In programs where players respect their coaches and team, such behavior wouldn’t occur. It’s the environment that allows such attitudes to persist.” He drew comparisons with institutions like Indiana University, where such actions would be quickly curtailed.
Sanders previously guided Colorado to a 9-4 record in 2024, culminating in a bowl appearance against BYU, which they lost 36-14. However, the departure of key players like quarterback Shedeur Sanders and cornerback Travis Hunter to the NFL left a gap the program has been unable to fill effectively. The preceding season saw the Buffaloes achieve only a 3-9 record. Presently, their 2-3 standing doesn’t inspire much optimism, especially with formidable opponents like No. 12 Utah, No. 18 Oklahoma State, and No. 22 Houston approaching.
