A chemical tank malfunction in Southern California resulted in a large-scale evacuation of Garden Grove residents. The city, located about 40 miles south of Los Angeles, has seen 50,000 of its 170,000 residents evacuated due to concerns over a potential explosion.
Incident Overview
The issue began when a tank at GKN Aerospace Transparency Systems overheated. It started venting vapors, prompting a response from local and state officials to prevent disaster. As of now, no injuries have been reported.
Orange County Fire Authority interim chief TJ McGovern stated that efforts are ongoing to manage the situation. A crack in the tank was identified, which might help relieve internal pressure. There is no reported active leak, and atmospheric monitoring shows no chemical release from the tank at present.
Cooling Efforts and Monitoring
The chemical inside the tank, methyl methacrylate, is used in making plastic parts. Firefighters have been actively cooling the tank with water to prevent a rise in temperature. The interior has reached 100 degrees Fahrenheit, an increase since the previous day.
Drones are deployed for constant temperature monitoring. Containment barriers are also in place to prevent environmental contamination should a spill occur.
Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency. He requested federal support to aid local authorities. Environmental authorities confirm that air pollution remains under control.
Safety Concerns and Impact
Methyl methacrylate exposure carries health risks, including respiratory and neurological issues. Experts highlight the importance of comprehensive air monitoring if an explosion were to occur.
Nearby Disneyland remains outside the evacuation zone, though they are closely watching the situation. Several shelters have been set up for displaced residents. Photos show the normally busy streets of Garden Grove empty.
Legal Action and Company Response
Residents have initiated a class-action lawsuit against GKN Aerospace. They cite potential property value impacts and demand accountability. GKN Aerospace has expressed regret over the incident and is focused on preventing further risks.
Previously, GKN Aerospace settled with state regulators over violations, paying more than $900,000 for issues related to emissions and recordkeeping.
