The Chicago Blackhawks had a strong record against the Dallas Stars in the 2025-26 season, winning two out of three games. However, in the new season, the outcome was different. During a morning skate on Saturday, coach Jeff Blashill reminded his team of past challenges by mentioning their significant loss to the Mammoth earlier this month.
In a new matchup against the Stars, the Blackhawks disappointed fans with a 4-0 loss at the United Center, where 18,233 fans attended. This game interrupted their first winning streak of the season, showcasing defensive difficulties and frequent puck turnovers. The team now holds a record of 3-6-0 and has a few days off before facing the Montreal Canadiens on Friday. Captain Connor Bedard sees this break as an opportunity to practice and improve.
Although the Stars outshot the Hawks 12-5 in the first period, the Hawks had several scoring opportunities. Unfortunately, they failed to capitalize, and the fans expressed frustration with missed passes during potential breakaways. Defenseman Alex Vlasic acknowledged these errors, noting that the Stars punished the Blackhawks for frequent turnovers.
An early goal by Jason Robertson was nullified due to an offside call, ending the first period scoreless. Bedard pointed out unexploited power play chances, suggesting they could have significantly altered the game’s outcome.
“We got to create more (chances),” Bedard said. “I thought we had a few good looks where (if) they go in, it obviously changes the game.”
In the second period, the Blackhawks’ energy waned. Dallas goaltender Jake Oettinger, with 19 saves, secured his third shutout in six games. Coach Blashill noted the team’s hesitance to attack the net, which allowed the Stars to defend effectively.
Robertson managed to score on a power play early in the second period. Arttu Hyry added another goal, extending the lead to 2-0. Hyry and Roope Hintz sealed the win in the third period, bringing the final score to 4-0 as the Stars managed to outshoot the Hawks 32-19.
The Stars, with a 4-3-1 record, are still adapting post-playoff exit last year but remain a strong defensive team. In contrast, the Blackhawks have struggled against solid opponents, leading to defeats in Utah and against the Stars.
Bedard emphasized the team’s lack of precision and positioning issues that kept them from playing efficiently. Young center Anton Frondell had an uncharacteristically poor night, managing just one faceoff win and two shots in over 12 minutes of play. Despite the off night, Blashill expressed confidence in Frondell’s ability to bounce back.
The Blackhawks have faced five playoff teams from last season, including the Vegas Golden Knights, Mammoth, Buffalo Sabres, Carolina Hurricanes, and Stars, struggling against all. Vlasic remarked on the Stars’ discipline and intelligent play, highlighting areas where the Hawks need improvement to succeed.
