UCLA Beats Wisconsin to Stay Unbeaten in Big Ten

Quarterback Ty Dieffenbach, taking on his first start for UCLA after Nico Iamaleava’s injury, led his team to a 17-7 victory over Wisconsin at the Rose Bowl. The win solidified the Bruins’ position as the only undefeated team in the Big Ten, improving their record to 6-0.

Dieffenbach demonstrated poise under pressure, passing for 264 yards. His performance included orchestrating a crucial six-play, 89-yard drive in the fourth quarter, securing the outcome for UCLA. Despite committing eight penalties that resulted in 78 yards, the Bruins managed to convert 13 third downs, showcasing efficiency in pivotal moments.

Facing Wisconsin’s formidable defense, ranked 15th in total defense, UCLA encountered difficulties in their running game, averaging only 3.2 yards per carry. Heisman Trophy contender Wayne Knight was limited to 29 yards, though he added another touchdown to his season tally.

With Iamaleava injured last week, Dieffenbach stepped up, throwing 22 completions out of 33 attempts. His near-flawless execution was pivotal in setting up UCLA’s first touchdown, connecting with Jalen Saint Paul on a 21-yard pass before Knight’s one-yard scoring run.

The second significant drive by UCLA in the fourth quarter saw Dieffenbach linking up for gains of 28 and 33 yards, setting up a touchdown by Anthony Woods from three yards out. Although he threw one interception, the turnover came as a result of a failed Hail Mary at the half’s end.

The Bruins’ defense was instrumental in securing the win. Despite lacking starting cornerback Rodrick Pleasant, they restricted Wisconsin to just 214 total yards and a mere 66 passing yards. Wisconsin’s leading receiver, Jaylon Domingeaux, was kept to 26 yards.

Wisconsin’s quarterback, Colton Joseph, managed 71 rushing yards and one score, utilizing a variety of tactics to penetrate UCLA’s defense. Nevertheless, Wisconsin couldn’t capitalize on opportunities, with standout plays from UCLA, including a key 10-yard sack by Jalen Woods, keeping them off the scoreboard in decisive moments.

Late efforts by Wisconsin to seize control were thwarted by UCLA’s defense. A critical stop on fourth down in the fourth quarter prevented further scoring chances for the Badgers.
