Chicago Cubs Face Key Decisions as Regular Season Ends

The final day of the regular season for the Chicago Cubs brings several important decisions. This not only includes determining their upcoming opponents in the best-of-three wild-card series starting Tuesday but also finalizing pitching plans for the initial playoff round.

Kevin Gausman’s Wild-Card Status

A major concern involves pitcher Kevin Gausman’s readiness. His ability to participate in the wild-card series depends on his condition following Sunday’s bullpen session at Tropicana Field, Tampa, Fla. Gausman suffered a left shoulder injury on Wednesday during a game against the Miami Marlins when he made a diving tag at third base. This play led to him hitting the ground hard, causing discomfort in his shoulder previously dislocated in high school.

Manager Craig Counsell stated that the team continues to monitor Gausman. He hasn’t undergone any imaging for his shoulder. After playing catch on Friday, Gausman felt sore. Sunday is considered critical for evaluating his readiness to pitch.

Planning the Playoff Pitching

Counsell expressed a focus on efficiently getting through the postseason, emphasizing the importance of achieving 27 outs. A consistent recent performance saw Gausman pitch into the sixth inning during consecutive starts, conceding just two runs each time. His postseason experience, notably with the Toronto Blue Jays’ World Series run last year, adds value to the Cubs’ strategy.

Despite efforts to return to form, Gausman’s optimism about starting the playoffs is dwindling. He emphasized the significance of the next two days to regain normalcy and readiness, though doubts linger. Gausman remarked on his fortunate health throughout his career, noting the frustration with the current injury impacting his pitching delivery.

Alternative Pitching Options

If Gausman is unavailable, alternatives include left-hander Matthew Boyd and possibly Shota Imanaga, contingent on their use in Sunday’s game. Right-hander Clay Holmes could be a candidate for Game 2 on Wednesday or a possible Game 3 on Thursday. Left-hander David Peterson might contribute from the bullpen, given his recent form.

The team is exploring varied rotation strategies given the uncertainties. Peterson advised starters to maintain peak form, regardless of their role in the playoffs. He underscores the importance of contributing effectively, whether as a starter or bullpen option, highlighting the teamwork needed during this playoff segment.
