Trade Deadline Decisions
The Chicago Cubs face a critical decision at the upcoming trade deadline on August 3. The team’s president of baseball operations, Jed Hoyer, emphasized the importance of the next two weeks in clarifying both their own position and the broader league landscape. The uncertainty regarding which teams will be selling adds complexity to the decision-making process.
Hoyer stated, “We’ve got to wait, we’ve got to get closer to the deadline. This year there’s a jumble in the league, with everyone in the AL still in the race.” This was illustrated by the team’s situation in 2023, when the Cubs defied expectations by holding onto star player Cody Bellinger and acquiring third baseman Jeimer Candelario, ultimately finishing just a game shy of a wild-card spot.
Current Position
The Cubs entered Friday night in the top wild-card position, trailing the Milwaukee Brewers by five games in the NL Central. Hoyer noted, “We’ve put ourselves in a good position,” while indicating a focus on enhancing the pitching staff. The return of injured players will become clearer over the next two weeks, which may influence their trade strategy.
Injury Updates
Right-handed starter Jameson Taillon, who suffered a hamstring injury in early June, is set to return in the upcoming series against the Detroit Tigers. Manager Craig Counsell confirmed Taillon’s activation for the series, although the specific game is yet to be decided. “Hopefully Jameson will pitch coming up next week,” Hoyer added.
Other injured pitchers slated for return include Edward Cabrera, who will engage in live batting practice next week, eyeing an early August return. Closer Daniel Palencia is progressing through rehab in Arizona with a revised mid-August timeline after an initial setback.
For position players, third baseman Matt Shaw continues to grapple with a lingering wrist sprain, affecting his ability to swing the bat.
Pitching Staff Considerations
Cubs manager Craig Counsell affirmed the importance of maintaining a robust pitching roster despite potential player recoveries. “You can never have too much pitching,” Hoyer reiterated, acknowledging the depth challenges faced in the first half and stressing the importance of acquiring additional talent as needed.
The Cubs are committed to strengthening their arms, relying on both trade opportunities and potential player recoveries to fortify their lineup.
